It’s hard to keep all the Pablo Escobar films straight, so let’s just clear the slate and forget about them for a moment. Let’s focus on Escobar, the latest attempt that will star Javier Bardem and Penolope Cruz (their roles are unknown).The film will of course be about the rise to power of the greatest drug trafficker the world has ever seen. I don’t mean that in a good way, to be clear.
The film will be based on a Spanish language memoir, Loving Pablo, Hating Escobar by Virginia Vallejo. She was a respected Colombian journalist until it was realized that she had a romantic affair with Pablo Escobar in the mid-1980s. That put a damper on things pretty quickly. She published her memoir in 2007.
Spanish director Fernando León de Aranoa is on board to both adapt and direct the film. So it seems to be a pretty authentic cultural affair for all parties involved at this point. So I doubt we have to worry about Johnny Depp in prosthetics as the narcotrafficker.
